One at a Time
A Week in an American Animal Shelter
One at a Time

This compelling book brings the tragic issue of unwanted companion animals vividly to life via a true account of seven days in a typical U.S. animal shelter. With compelling photos and moving vignettes, it chronicles the stories of 75 animals who passed through a northern California shelter during one week. Their gripping stories include excerpts from actual shelter records; the words of shelter workers, volunteers, and visitors; and the final conclusion of each animal's journey through the shelter system.

CAPS Event Advisory

Who: The Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS)

As the only national nonprofit dedicated exclusively to protecting companion animals, CAPS' foremost concern is the abuse and suffering of pet shop and puppy mill dogs. Founded in 1992, CAPS actively addresses this issue through investigations, education, media relations, legislative involvement, puppy mill dog rescues, consumer assistance and pet shop employee relations.

What: Claws and Paws Shop, an online auction through cMarket

cMarket is an on-demand, online auction platform solely for nonprofit organizations. The Boston-based company's services offer proven resources to build new sources of income while raising awareness about a nonprofit's mission.

When: November 5 - 30, 2007

Where: www.caps.cmarket.com

Why: The purpose of the Claws and Paws Shop online auction is to raise money and awareness for CAPS' critical work on behalf of pet shop and puppy mill animals.

How You Can Help:

Donations of Goods and Services

Please donate or help us find items for the auction, especially goods and services for companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, birds, small animals) or with a companion animal theme. Collectibles, such as art, photographs and jewelry, are always popular auction items. Donors should supply a description and photograph of the item to be auctioned. Items being auctioned will have links to donors' websites.

Please join/register with our online community through the CAPS website, www.caps-web.org, in order to receive updates and notifications before and during the auction.

Visit www.caps.cMarket.com

Then select the Donate Items button down the left column to get started.

Of course, we are always grateful for monetary donations, as well. This option will be available on the Claws and Paws Shop home page, and one can always donate online through the CAPS website.

Benefits to being a donor or sponsor

An online auction, especially one with national participants, is an excellent marketing opportunity for merchants and sponsors. CAPS will provide information on the Claws and Paws Shop online auction to a national membership base of more than 3500 members through The CAPS Communicator newsletter, spring and fall appeal letters, and an announcement postcard. We will also notify approximately 50,000 prospective members through spring and fall appeal letters. CAPS is building an email list to remind potential donors of the auction and to promote certain items during the auction.
