I spoke to Mr. Bontrager (Caucasian, Amish male about 40 years old, about 5’10”, 170 lbs., with short brown hair and long brown beard) and his son (Caucasian, Amish male, about 15 years old, 5’6′, 140 lbs., with short brown hair), but I did not observe the kennel. The son explained to me that breeding dogs are the family’s primary source of income and that they have about forty small breed non-shedding dogs. He told me their kennel is USDA and state-licensed, and that a sheriff comes by occasionally to look at their kennel so he can tell people who are complaining about the kennel that everything is fine at it. The son also told me that they breed dogs for up to eight years and that their dogs are bred twice a year without intentionally skipping breeding cycles.
