The Crisis at California’s Municipal Shelters is the Subject of a Recent TV News Story in the San Francisco Bay Area
CAPS is making a documentary called The Crisis at California’s Municipal Shelters to push for a much-needed law that would require the state to license, regulate, and inspect municipal shelters. As with a similar law in New York, the shelters would have three years to come into compliance with the help of state funding and training.
CAPS President Deborah Howard met with legislative directors for animal friendly state legislators in April and will start working on the legislation with the offices of Sen. Henry Stern and Sen. Kelly Seyarto in July.
Ms. Howard recently appeared on ABC 7 in the San Francisco Bay Area to discuss The Crisis at California’s Municipal Shelters and a recent, tragic incident at San Jose Animal Care Center involving an underweight, dehydrated Brussels Griffin dog named Lola, who was brought in by animal control as a stray.
Lola was left unattended in a kennel while hooked up to an IV line with a slip lead around her neck. She got entangled in the line and lead. Animal care attendants, including one who will be in our documentary, kept alerting supervisors in order to obtain immediate veterinary care for the dog. She was finally taken to a veterinary clinic, where she passed away. The UC Davis necropsy showed that she had pancreatitis and serious liver problems.
Lola had a family, but they kept her in a garage, and this was the second time she had been lost.
This is the second story CAPS has worked on with ABC 7. CAPS convinced them to cover a rally held by animal advocates before a San Jose City Council meeting. This news report also featured the second trailer to our documentary, which has footage of San Jose Animal Care.
