The Campbells, whom I previously investigated in 2021, have a typical puppy mill with dogs living in small wire cages. The kennel was a series of buildings with raised indoor/outdoor cages attached to them. There appeared to be an area of outdoor pens that was older and overgrown, but it was difficult to see through numerous trees. The area I could see had four kennel buildings, each with raised cages on two or three sides. Cages were of varying sizes, but most appeared to be about three to six feet long, two to three feet wide, and two feet tall. They all had sheets fully or partially covering their tops, and doggie-doors to access their indoor portions.

Buildings appeared to be small barns, with one being a larger structure that had cages on only part of its longer walls. I saw doggie doors on one of the longer walls that weren’t attached to cages, indicating there used to be more there, but they were taken down. A chain link run was attached to a wall of the longer building as well, but it was partially overgrown with weeds.

With the cages being partially covered it was difficult to see exactly how many there were, but there appeared to be about 60 total, and I could see dogs in cages here and there as I observed the property, but not in every cage. Overall, it appeared the dogs had just enough room to move a few steps before having to turn around in their right enclosures if they walked lengthwise in a cage, and widthwise had only a few inches in front of them if they stood or laid down.

Evidence contradicting stores’ claims:

I visited Petland Frisco on 7/27/23 and asked an employee about the conditions in which breeders keep their breeding dogs. He said, “They got these huge yards and stuff, and that’s usually where they’re spending a lot of their time.” I asked, “So they’re not like kept in pens and cages and stuff like that?” He said, “No, no, no.” Another employee showed me a video of dogs running around a grassy yard and said, “They’ll get multiple play times a day.” Campbell’s facility has no grassy yard for dogs to play in, and it’s clear they are kept in small wire cages, which is the exact opposite of what Petland claims.

I visited the Puppy Dreams Garland on 11/8/22. An employee said that the store’s breeders have “only a few” breeding dogs each, that dogs live in “play pens,” and that, “It’s mostly their pets they’re breeding.” I visited Puppy Dreams Arlington on 4/18/23 where an employee told the mother dogs and puppies have a “play area.” Clearly these are all outright lies.

Teacup Puppies and Boutique offers no information about their breeders on their website. However, they do say, “Our puppies sleep in clean and cozy condos with warm blankets and heating pads. We never use cages with painful metal wire flooring, as this can be especially dangerous for teacup sized puppies.” They also have a long list of celebrities who have purchased puppies from them. Such advertising is misleading, making people confuse the conditions of puppies at the store with puppies and breeding dogs at the breeding facility.
