Goal of Services is to Decrease Shelter Euthanasia and Animal Abandonment and Cruelty
CAPS has been partnering with Kern County Animal Services in Bakersfield, California for more than three years to help save the lives of at-risk abandoned dogs who end up in the shelter. Our efforts have saved the lives of 346 dogs and six cats (cats are not at risk for euthanasia unless very ill or badly injured).
CAPS is now using its social media to promote the county’s low-cost and free spay/neuter services, with the Instagram and Facebook posts being advertised to reach more residents of Kern County.
Kern County Low-Cost and Free Spay/Neuter Services
For 2025, Kern County has funding for $20 and free spay/neuter services for unincorporated county residents. Services are free for residents who live in 93305-93308.
County residents who are unable to pay $20 at one of the participating veterinary clinics, may qualify for free services with a voucher from Kern Humane Society (thrift shop).
Pit Bulls are eligible for free spay/neuter at two clinics participating in the Save the Pitties voucher program.
Here is the resource page on the Kern County Animal Services website:
ROC Vet Tech Program is also offering $20 spays and neuters on Tuesdays – Thursdays.
Amar a Nuestros Animales Significa Esterilizar y Castrarlos/Loving Our Animals Means Spaying and Neutering
CAPS produced a PSA in English (Loving Our Animals Means Spaying and Neutering) and Spanish (Amar a Nuestros Animales Significa Esterilizar y Castrarlos) for television and radio about the importance of spaying and neutering dogs and cats. Our primary focus is on the Latino community, but we are also focusing on lower socioeconomic geographic areas for English speakers. Jacqueline Piñol, a professional actress and animal advocate whose parents came from Latin America, stars in the PSA.
Spay/Neuter PSA is Airing on Numerous English and Spanish language Television and Radio Stations
CAPS’ spay and neuter PSA is airing on hundreds of local television and radio stations, mostly Spanish language, around the United States and its territories. Nationally, the PSA is airing on A & E Networks (A & E, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime Real Women, History, FYI, Vice, Crime + Investigation, Military History, History en Español), Warner Brothers Discovery stations (Food, Travel, Cooking, HGTV, Tru TV) and Free Speech TV. The CNN placement resulted in numerous calls and message through the CAPS website contact form. Our PR professional is currently working on getting the Spanish PSA on Univision’s national cable stations.
CAPS receives daily inquiries from people across the United States and even in Canada wanting to know where to find low cost and free spay/neuter services in their communities.
Bilingual Resource Page
The CAPS website has a bilingual resource page on the importance of spay/neuter and vaccinations. In addition to the PSA and an edited version of Univision’s Despierta America segment, which featured our PSA, the page has flyers in English and Spanish. The entire CAPS website can be translated to Spanish.
