Approximate number of dogs observed at time of investigation: 10 puppies
Puppies were kepy in closed topped glass front enclosures with blankets for bedding. There were no cage cards indicating origin of the puppies. A Disclosure sign was on display. This store also sells fish, reptiles, turtles, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, mice, ferrets and rats.
I saw approximately six finches in a cage without water. I reported this to an employee who identified herself as the manager, a female who gave her name as Mary Pat, who said she would take care of the issue.
(Violation of Article 26-A of the Agriculture and Markets Law, § 401. Minimum standards of animal care, 3. Feeding and watering. (d) Animals shall be provided with regular access to clean, fresh water, supplied in a sanitary manner sufficient for its needs, except when there are instructions from a duly licensed veterinarian to withhold water for medical reasons).
I spoke with a male employee who gave his name as Skylar. Skylar said the breeders are out in Iowa and that the store owners do occasionally take a trip out there to visit them. Skylar gave the name of the breeder as Squaw Creek Kennels in Iowa. I asked Skylar if the puppies came from a backyard puppy mill and he said “NO” and said he would would not work for a place that worked with a puppy mill. I asked Skylar if the puppies came from anywhere nasty and he shook his head “no”. He said the breeders do not overbreed. He said that all the puppies have been healthy and said the store owners are happy with the breeder.
A female employee who gave her name as Shelley showed me a vert certificate that mentioned a Dr Wilkes, license number 6415.
I spoke with the manager, Mary Pat, who told me that the previous manager had visited the breeder and spent about a week out there. She said it had been about three years since the owner has been to the breeder, and that the store had been dealing with the same breeder for between 20-25 years.
