Companion Animal Protection Society Debuts New “Adopt, Don’t Shop” TV PSA

PSA to Air Across the Country, Designed to Raise Awareness about the Pet Shop – Puppy Mill Industry

Who: Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS)
Where: Cohasset, MA
When: September 24, 2014

Companion Animal Protection Society’s (CAPS) new “Adopt, Don’t Shop” television public service announcement is coming to a TV screen near you. The 30-second spot is part of the national nonprofit’s ongoing mission to educate the public about atrocities in puppy mills and the risks associated with buying dogs at pet shops and through Internet sellers supplied by these inhumane facilities.

This new initiative comes on the heels of CAPS’ Models Against Pet Shops and Puppy Mills TV PSA, which has aired or is still airing on national networks, including USA Network, National Geographic Channel, Food Network, Travel Channel, Cooking Channel, HGTV, Sundance Channel. The PSA also aired on five major PBS stations, Animal Planet in New York City and local stations around the country. Both spots feature CAPS Spokesmodel Beatrice, a sassy Basset Hound puppy mill survivor. The “Adopt, Don’t Shop” radio PSA is already airing on stations across the country.

“The connection between the millions of homeless animals in this country and the countless animals being inhumanely bred for sale in pet shops and over the Internet is a tragic and critical issue,” said CAPS President Deborah Howard. “Our organization stands up for animals who cannot speak for themselves while educating the public about the horrors of the pet shop and puppy mill industry. We hope our PSA will compel the public to adopt animal companions from shelters and rescue organizations rather than buying them through pet shops or online sellers.”

The “Adopt, Don’t Shop” TV PSA was produced by Mark Helman, one of the founders of the nonprofit company Heltel. Helman donated his time and resources to developing the PSA after reading a Boston Globe article on CAPS and the Models Against Pet Shops and Puppy Mills campaign in March 2013. Helman is a former editor at “NBC Nightly News.” Filming took place in Hull and Cohasset, MA.
