Puppies were in cages with solid floors on three sides, including one side made of glass, wire doors opposite the glass walls, and wire floorings. There were one to two puppies per cage, and about 60 cages in the store. Each cage had cage cards with breeder and broker information for puppies, and USDA inspection reports in folders were on top of walls the cages were set in, about seven feet up. About 20 of the cages had blue outer walls instead of white, and had “Rescue and Adoption” written over them. Some cages were empty, but those that were not each had a single adult dog in them of various breeds, including one pit bull.

I spoke to an (Caucasian male, about 40 years old, 6’6″, 190 lbs with short brown hair and black-rimmed glasses) about the store’s breeders. He said the store manager visits breeders every year, and said NJ has the toughest laws on pet stores of any state. He showed me a large poster in the store with pictures of dogs playing in large yards, and said someone from the store has visited all of the kennels in the picture, but didn’t promise all of the store’s breeders are like what is shown on the poster. He did, however, say that he has visited several kennels and all of them had fields for dogs to play in. The employee claimed most breeders don’t breed dogs past five or six years old, and also claimed breeders’ dogs get lots of exercise and that that while many breeders have employees working at their kennels, others are family run.

He told me some of the dogs for adoption in the store come from shelters the store partners with, but most come from individuals who bring the dogs straight into the store to surrender them.
