My Sunday column is a side trip from the issues I mostly write about, and has nothing to do with international relations or politics. Rather, it’s about our ethical obligations to animals.

“I have long admired your column for addressing human rights issues, especially those of women in third world countries. Please also address the suffering of those animals kept in horrific conditions in thousand of puppy mills in the Midwest, PA and NY (the latter two have mostly Amish mills) in order to produce puppies for pet shop and Internet puppy sales.
The Companion Animal Protection Society, the nonprofit I started more than 20 years ago, has investigated more than 1,000 puppy (and cat) mills, most of them USDA-licensed. Our undercover employment investigation brought down one of the largest and most notorious dog brokers in the country (she had 900 adults dogs and 400 puppies). We were also behind the OIG’s scathing report on the USDA’s failure to enforce the Animal Welfare Act as it pertains to this industry.
While millions of dog, cats and other companion animals suffer and die in often substandard shelters around the country, uninformed consumers continue to buy, often on impulse, puppies and kittens from pet shops and online. There are 111 pet shops in NYC, Westchester and on Long Island. Meanwhile, the conditions at Animal Care and Control centers in NYC are horrible. Young kittens, often as young as a month or less, are routinely euthanized.
