Number of dogs and puppies noted in a 1/12/26 USDA inspection: 68 dogs and 12 puppies

The kennel was a metal building that appeared to have indoor/outdoor runs on its north and south sides, but I only saw the northern runs. I saw sixteen outer runs, with doggie-doors to allow access to their indoor portions. Seven had stairs leading to the doggie-doors. Runs were about eight feet long and about four feet wide, with metal bars for walls. The runs appeared to have gravel floorings covered in saw dust. The metal roof of the kennel building extended out over the runs.

I saw 10 large blond dogs, and one small black and brown dog. The small dog was in a run by herself, and the other dogs were in four runs—four dogs in one run, three in another, two in a third, and a single dog in a fourth run. The dogs were lying down most of the time I observed them, and several dogs were lying width-wise in their runs. There appeared to be just inches of space for them to do so without touching both sides of the walls at once.

There was what appeared to be an exercise yard for the dogs just outside their runs. It had a chain-link wall and gravel flooring and was about 60 feet long and 10 feet wide. There were some dark spots in the yard that seemed to be feces, and there were other darker spots that were clearly grass. The dogs runs, on the other hand, were dotted with piles of feces.

A wheelbarrow and shovel were stored in a small hall between the dog runs and exercise area. Two metal dishes were on the ground next to it (3.1 Housing facilities, general (b) Condition and site).

Evidence contradicting store’s claims

Petland Overland Park’s website states that the breeding dogs supplying its store with puppies are given “safe and comfortable housing with ample room” and “frequent socialization and exercise.” The store also shows videos of dogs and puppies running in grassy fields and playing on playground equipment. However, the dog runs at Schwartz kennel give his dogs little room to do more than pace in one direction, turn around, and go back. And the play area at the facility was not in use when I observed it, contained no toys or enrichment of any kind, and looked nothing like the grassy fields in the misleading Petland videos.
