I spoke to Mr. Doherty (Caucasian male, about 60 years old, 5’10”, 250 lbs., with short white hair, a white moustache and beard) and a woman who identified herself as Marie Doherty (Caucasian female, about 50 years old, 5’3”, 200 lbs., with long brown hair and glasses). They offered little information about their business, as most of the time I spent talking to them was in defending myself against accusations of being associated with animal protection groups.
Statements made by the Doherty’s that contradict pet store claims
However, Mr. Doherty did say, “We sell to pet stores.” I then asked him, “Do they have to come out and inspect your place and all that kind of stuff?” Mr. Doherty did not respond, but Marie Doherty shook her head to indicate no. I then asked, “You don’t have to mess with that?” Marie Doherty shook her head back and forth again. This contradicts the statement by Chelsea Kennel Club (New York, NY) that says it inspects its breeders’ kennels.
Mr. Doherty also told me that he and his wife are USDA-licensed brokers. This contradicts the claims by Chelsea Kennel Club (New York, NY) and Westchester Puppies and Kittens (Hartsdale, NY) that their stores don’t use brokers to obtain puppies.
