Media Advisory: SUFFOLK COUNTY LEGISLATURE TO ADOPT NEW PET DEALER LAW

05/31/2014

Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman and Legislator William Spencer, M.D. will hold a press conference on June 3, 2014 to discuss proposed changes to a local law regulating pet shops and pet dealers. They will be meeting with members of various animal advocacy groups, including Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS), and pet store owners to show support for the amendment before it reaches the floor for a final vote on Tuesday. The Government Operations, Personnel, Housing & Consumer Protection Committee already unanimously approved the bill on May 28. The bill will be the first of its kind in New York State, following a recently signed state law authorizing municipalities to adopt stricter local regulations for pet dealers.
The most important provision in Introductory Resolution 1047-14 prohibits pet shops from purchasing animals from questionable breeders with violations on their most recent USDA report.
