The only puppy in the store was kept in an open-topped enclosure with wood flooring covered by a couple sheets of newspaper and a bed pad. A card was on the enclosure listing the puppy’s breed, gender, date of birth, vaccinations, microchip number, veterinary check and price of $1,600.
A pet shop license was on display, but there was no disclosure notice. (330 CMR § 12.05 Restriction of Sale (2) (a)).
When I asked an unidentified female employee about the puppy, she told me that it had been born at this location and was the only puppy for sale. This employee told me that they usually only had one puppy on sale at a time, not lots of puppies together. This employee appeared reluctant to answer my questions and repeated that the puppy had been born there. She failed to disclose that the owner of the pet shop obtains breeding dogs from Kathy Loe in Beloit Kansas, who has a USDA “A” license.
